  • Discussed the functions and characteristics of money
  • Completed a review about money and banking (get from basket)

Wednesday, May 7
Today, we:
  • Practiced graphic the Lorenz curve and calculating the Gini Coefficient
  • Looked online at some info about poverty (look at http://bit.ly/waronpov and Google "Poverty in the United States", and wrote our thoughts about the following question on a half sheet: What role does the government have in dealing with the income gap/poverty in the US?
  • Began work on an activity for Chapter 12

Today, we:
  • discussed ideas about inflation, including its negative effects (review the terms and complete this sheet and turn in for participation credit on 5/7 - not accepted late or if your absence is unexcused)
  • Read Section 3 of Chapter 11 and answered questions 1-5 on own paper
  • Worked on oral exam questions

Tuesday, April 15 - Happy tax day!
Today, we:
  • Worked in groups to create the best 54321 advice about various financial literacy topics (planned as a group, typed In Google Docs and shared with me at carin.barrett@thompsonschools.org)
  • Financial Literacy Topics - 5-4-3-2-1 Reflection
  • As you read about your topic, write the following on your own sheet of paper - we will be using this information in class next time, and it will contribute to the point value of your financial literacy portfolio:
    • Write a 5-sentence summary of the main ideas of this lesson - use generalizations to describe the concept and it’s general importance to financial literacy.
    • Write 4 facts (specific, can be direct quotes from the article) that support your generalizations
    • Write 3 tips everyone should know about this topic in managing their financial life
    • Write 2 important terms to know connected to this topic and how they help you to navigate financial issues (they can be terms from the front-page “glossary,” or others)
    • Write 1 way this knowledge will affect your financial life specifically - relate this idea to your personal goals or values

  • Log in to Google Drive, the new version of Google Docs (click here)
  • Create a copy of the Budget Activity Template
    • In the upper lefthand corner, click "File," then "Make a Copy"
    • Rename the copy "Budgeting Activity -- [your name]" and click "OK"
    • In the upper righthand corner, click the blue "Share" button
    • Change the access: Click "Change..." and click "Private." Then click green "Save" button

  • Download the Webquest document and follow the directions for every part of your spreadsheet:
  • When you've entered all your information, make adjustments to your budget as necessary.
  • When finished, you must answer THREE of these questions in complete paragraphs. (That means at least 5 sentences per paragraph.)
    • Are you happy with your final budget? Why or why not? Explain with specifics.
    • What was the easiest part of making your budget? The hardest?
    • What were you surprised by as you completed your budget?
    • What hard decisions did you have to make as you were balancing your budget?
    • How did you use the information you learned about from class to help complete your budget?
    • How will you use the information you researched today to create real-life budgets once you graduate high school?

  • Completed our paragraphs about the wise use of credit
  • Learned a little about how a credit score is generated and how it affects us (get from bin in classroom)
  • Worked on our stock portfolios
  • Worked on a 54321 assignment regarding a financial literacy topic (see me for makeup)

Today, we:
  • Gathered facts and terminology from the textbook about how people employ credit
  • Viewed part of a documentary about the history of credit cards and some ominous laws affecting them (for makeup, go here and watch the video to 36:32 (about a half hour of it), filling out the guide as you watch. This is part of your financial literacy portfolio, so everyone needs to finish it.
  • Began working with our sharky tasty partners (with, unfortunately, no proof that one has ever eaten a Mantis Shrimp) on deciphering a credit card offer (see me upon return for make-up)

Thursday, March 27
Today, we:
  • Thought about how entrepreneurial characteristics are evident in what entrepreneurs have to say about business (see me for makeup)
  • viewed a documentary about Carl Fisher as a case study in American entrepreneurial spirit (if you are doing the business plan as a project, you'll need to make this up after break)
  • looked at a host of other entrepreneurs here and reflected on how this behavior has impacted our personal lives and American life overall (complete this over break if you are absent 3/27 - simply click the "here" in this bullet and follow the directions.

  • Discussed the Oral Exam questions in a little more depth (see previous post for copy of questions)
  • Reviewed the project options, for a little work during spring break
  • Worked in groups to explore some current and former business people to understand the impact of business on US history and the current economy

  • Thought about what we already know about personal financial literacy (complete on a piece of 11x17 paper or two pieces of 8.5x11, folded into ten squares total) (DUE THURSDAY):
Consider the following topics:

  • Paying for college
  • Budgeting
  • “Pay Yourself first” concept
  • Using credit wisely
  • Buying a car
  • Buying a home
  • Establishing an emergency fund
  • Saving and investing
  • Retirement
  • Consumer awareness and protection

On the front of your poster in each square (i.e., for each topic), write/draw the following:

  • On a scale of 1-5 (1 being very important, 5 being hardly important), how important is this topic to you right now in terms of what you hope your future holds? (make the number kinda big, in the center)
  • Draw images representing what exposure have you had to this topic in the media (news or commercial)/what personal connections or stories do you know about this topic

On the back of your poster in each square (i.e., for each topic), write the following:

  • What do you feel you confidently know about this topic already?
  • Explain your ranking for the topic.
  • What is a specific goal you have related to this topic (is it currently a personal goal of yours even? By when? In what way?)
  • What is a question you have about the topic that would help you reach your goal/help you be informed as your priorities or life situation might change?

Today, we:


Find a children’s book that illustrates three or more (preferably more) economic principles (anything we’ve learned so far – consumer preferences, prices, price system, etc.)

Assignment:

Write a 2-page paper (double-spaced, 12-point font, spelling and grammar do count) including the following things:
  1. 1. A brief description of your book’s story line
  2. 2. A discussion of what economic principles apply to the story
  3. 3. A discussion of what those economic principles are and what role they play in our larger economic system
  4. 4. As a conclusion, discuss how economics might continue to impact the story if it was continued (add on to the story and discuss how economics would come into play).

This will be graded for writing and content and will be worth 30 points.
You must bring a book to use on Monday or you will forfeit 10% of your paper grade - if you're having trouble finding a book, please email me by Sunday at noon at carin.barrett@thompsonschools.org

  • Completed the 5th assessment/turned in the 5th article
  • practiced visualizing what happens to markets as supply and demand act on them by graphing what would happen in various situations: (key will be posted for this on Wednesday, please try on your own first)

Today, we:
  • Completed our practice of the 11 supply and demand shifters (if you were absent Wednesday and Friday, read section 2 of chapters 3 and 4)
  • Received the 5th and final economics article/quiz assignment (quiz covers section 2 of chapters 3 and 4 and all of chapter 5)

Today, we:
  • Reviewed our findings from the "market in wheat game"
  • Completed a supply and demand curve based on some wheat schedules: , and afterwards defined equilibrium, shortage, and surplus from chapter 5, section 1
  • Read section 3 of chapter 5 and completed 1-4 from the section review

  • Used candy and paper chains to illustrate the ideas of diminishing marginal utility and diminishing marginal returns (get sheet from bin and refer to definitions)

Today, we:
  • Completed and presented out smartphone apps, using consumer interest data to derive demand curves (if you were absent, get some data from your partner to complete your sheet)
  • Answered some questions regarding the basics of the concept of demand

Wednesday, January 29:
Today, we:
  • Turned in our third assignment/took the third quiz
  • Studied the circular flow model in pure market form and in capitalist form
  • Began working to invent or innovate new smart phone apps, using Medl's AppIncubator as inspiration (propose your own app here!)

Monday, January 27:
Today, we:
  • Completed and viewed some visualizations of different economic systems, annotating them for specific evidence of who answers the three basic questions and what life would look like under that system.
  • Saw a terrifying image relating to the act of finning, and then discussed some mystery nations with our Sharky partners
  • Used our mystery nation discussion to establish why certain features of an economy matter A LOT when it comes to growth
  • On the BACK of the list of factors leading to long term economic growth, your instructions are to take notes on the 5 features of the US economy (found on page 29) -1) what are they, 2) what do they entail (brief explanation of feature) and 3) one specific example of how this feature applies to your daily life (or as close as you can get - family, etc)
  • Received the 3rd assignment, DUE WEDNESDAY - IF YOU CHOOSE TO TAKE THE QUIZ, IT COVERS CHAPTER 2 and the basics of CHAPTER 16

Thursday, January 23:
Today, we:
  • completed our group work connecting the social goals of economics to graphs reflecting attitudes about the 2012 election (if you were absent, get online and finish your part by January 26)
  • Completed the Comparing Economic Systems chart found in the previous day's entry
  • Began creating visualizations of these economic systems in groups

Tuesday, January 21:
Today, we:
  • Connected the Social Goals of economics to people's thoughts and feelings about the 2012 election (see your Google Drive for directions and materials, complete on own if absent)
  • Worked from the textbook to gather information about various types of economic systems in practice today (THE FRONT (first page) OF THIS SHEET IS COVERED IN CHAPTER 2, THE BACK (second) IS IN CHAPTER 16)

  • completed our Sharky partner discussions (you can find a first-person retelling of the Swissy and eDog story here and some really awesome shark jumping vids here, then get back to work).
  • connected the ideas discussed with our sharky partners to the social goals of economies and completed this sheet about those goals:

  • discussed the concept of the economic trilogy: scarcity, choice, and opportunity cost using candy bars (and no fighting to the death/knockout)
  • received the first assignment, DUE FRIDAY, DECEMBER 10 (if you choose to take the quiz Friday, it's over all we've done so far/section 1, 2 and 3 of Chapter 1)
  • Discussed Production Possibilities curves using an example (if you were absent, review section 3 of chapter 1)
